Welcome to Benedict Pics where I'm on a quest to find the best Eggs Benedict in Brooklyn. Or Manhattan. Really this is just an excuse to go to brunch and order Eggs Benedict every time. But ratings makes things official!

Caribbean Benedict @ Bk9

Caribbean Benedict @ Bk9

Full disclosure, Bk9 was one of the inciting factors for this blog. We went here a few months ago, seemingly recently after they opened and we did not have a good experience. My benedict eggs were fully hard boiled. They ended up comping us for it because of the mistake, and the rest of the dish was good. The resulting conversation about the pluses and minuses of the dish started the creation of the blog here. Naturally, I had to go back to give it a proper rating. Here is how the Bk9 eggs benedict fared the second time around.

Challenge: find any indication that there is a plantain base under there.

Base: Plantain. I've had several benedicts lately with plantain as the base. This was one of the better ones. You can't see it in the picture and it took me a few bites to figure out where it was, but It was actually very crispy and yummy mixed with the rest of the pieces.
Score: 4

Non-Egg Protein: Roasted Pork. As you can see in the picture, there was no shortage of pork, as compared to the plantain. And it was very tasty so the amount was warranted. I just wish there was more of the other parts to match the meat.
Score: 5

Eggs: So so much better than last time. Both were runny, but one was a little overdone with a thick to solid layer of yolk around the outside of the cavity. Overall though, still very good and fitting for a benedict.
Score: 8

That's the good stuff

You can clearly see the thick yolk layer. Still some runny stuff, but definitely missed out on some.

Sauce: Habanero hollandaise. Sounds awesome right? Well, there was no indication of any spice level, let alone habanero. I remember when we came here previously, the spicy hollandaise was what made me really miss the runny yolks to help balance the heat. Now there was no heat and hardly any hollandaise at all. Maybe it was just not a good sauce day, but it was disappointing.
Score: 2

Sides: Salad and potatoes. The salad was pretty standard with mixed greens and a light dressing. The potatoes were cooked fine but were pretty oily. They were edible, but not particularly enjoyable.
Score: 3

Bonus: The first time we went and were initially discussing the scoring system, I was ready to give bonus points for the free meal because of the poor execution. This time, they legitimately earned a bonus because the atmosphere was great. They have live jazz during afternoon brunch which is a really great touch and really fun. It was comfortably crowded and still not very loud. Bk9 has really come a long way since we first visited, and I'm really glad we gave them a second chance.
Score: 2

Nice centerpieces, jazz in the background, soccer on the tv (though not at the moment)...this is a great weekend activity.

Total Score: 24/30
