Benny @ Bread
Short dish name and restaurant, and wait after choosing not to wait 45 minutes for a table at Egg Shop because we were slow getting there and had a matinee to get to. But this was not a bad second choice around the corner. Bread is a decently sized, slightly underground but bright eating spot connected to the Nolitan Hotel. Between Egg Shop and The Butcher's Daughter, Bread is perfectly placed to take some of the brunch overflow, which might be a little telling of the quality versus the surrounding competitors. Having never been to the other two (though they are definitely on my list if we can get there early enough), I can only give you the breakdown of this benny.
Base: Polenta cake. So this was new, and was a nice alternative to a bread base, though ironic given the name of the restaurant. The texture and flavor went well in the overall dish, but my biggest complaint was that there wasn't enough. You can't see it in any of the photos to even see the good parts of it. What was there tasted good so that was a plus.
Score: 4
Non-Egg Protein: Braised pork belly and spinach. That's what they said anyway. What I got was more thinly sliced ham and spinach/broccoli/kale. Not that any of these things are inherently bad, it just wasn't what was advertised. The ham added a good saltiness while all those various greens made things a bit bitter. Especially since there a side salad, there didn't need to be so much greens on the benedict itself. Yay for being healthy, but this just didn't work as a whole. There was just too much going on at this level.
Score: 3
Eggs: Not great. Both were a bit overdone with pretty thick layers of yolk that stuck to the inside of the eggs. There was some runny yolk that helped mixing with the all over the place greens, but it would have been nice to have more.
Score: 6
Sauce: Hollandaise. If only the flavor was as good as it looked. The consistency was great and there were nice paprika and other leafy toppings, but the sauce was somehow bland. It was portioned well, but what's the point if it adds so little flavor?
Score: 3
Sides: Salad and potatoes. Unlike most of the benedict parts, the potatoes were actually really good., and I would have liked some more The salad was fine; it had some nice veggie add ins that were an elevation from just the greens.
