Welcome to Benedict Pics where I'm on a quest to find the best Eggs Benedict in Brooklyn. Or Manhattan. Really this is just an excuse to go to brunch and order Eggs Benedict every time. But ratings makes things official!

Eggs Benedict @ Anella

Eggs Benedict @ Anella

Yeah, I know it's been a long time since my last post. I've fallen behind in writing blogs up. It'll be fine. But for now, let me tell you about my venture to Anella in Greenpoint where I met up with a friend while our husbands played Risk Legacy. Brunch ended before the game so I'm watching things unfold as I'm writing this up. It looks intense, everyone seems to be enjoying themselves, so I think the game rates highly. At least seems to be faring better than the benedict at Anella...

Look at all that meat, hiding the shame of the base lies...But their bellinis were good and refreshing on a warm day.

Base: Toast. So here's what happened. Anella has biscuits on their menu. There are several menu items with biscuits as part of the dish. The menu does not specify the base of the benedict so I was going to ask if I could get a biscuit base. The waitress said it came with a biscuit base so I was excited. Until the benedict came out with a toast base and if you've read other posts, you know I love a biscuit base so my hopes were high, and then brutally dashed. It was disappointing on it's own, but toast? Basically the worst base because as much as you toast it, it will get soggy in the middle while being toasted and crunchy and difficult to cut on the edges. That is exactly what happened. This might be the most I've written about the base of a benedict, but this is what happens when you tell me there will be a biscuit and then don't deliver.

Non-Egg Protein: Prosciutto. This was fine. There was a lot of meat here and being prosciutto, was a bit fatty in some places. But that's the nature of the meat so it's fine. Combined with the difficult to cut toast though, these two layers made working to get a bite a bit of a challenge. I guess it tasted fine though.
Score: 3

Eggs: Also disappointing. The first one sort of had some runny yolk, but the second was slightly beyond soft boiled. The yolk was just kind of wet in the center and pretty much hard around the edges. Would have been good to have the yolk with the meat, but honestly it would have just destroyed the toast even more.

That's as runny as things got. It looks like merengue on the knife, which is a pretty accurate texture comparison.

I mean, we were eating outside, but there's no way it kept cooking the egg to this level of overdoneness.

Sauce: Hollandaise. It was a pretty normal hollandaise, but at this point, I feel like any small win is a major accomplishment. It was tasty and the right consistency and there was the right amount of it. Plus some small garnishes made the benedict at least look nice.
Score: 4

Sides: Potatoes and mixed greens. The potatoes were good, though I did feel like I had a weird mix of perfectly cooked and overcooked wedges. However, the ones that were perfectly cooked were delicious. The salad was actually really good too with a good variety of greens and lightly dressed so it was nice and light.
