Eggs Benedict @ Unione
Another Manhattan brunch, this time up in Harlem. It’s a long way to travel for brunch but it was a special occasion. Unione is listed as a wine bar, and it certainly looked like they had a great selection. We had reservations and it didn’t look like there was too much of a wait when we were there at 1:30, but all of the tables seemed to be full the whole time we were there.
Base: English Muffin. Standard English muffin with a nice toast level. Held up well and properly proportioned. I can’t say much more. Like this benedict, the muffin was solid without being fancy.
Score: 4
Non-Egg Protein: Canadian Bacon. The meat was nice and thick and properly sized to the muffin which is always a plus in my book.
Score: 4
Eggs: Both ok. Each were the same amount of slightly overcooked with some solid yolk, but there was plenty of runny yolk to compensate. This place was packed and yet somehow these eggs were better done than other places where we were pretty much the only people there. Performance under pressure I suppose.
Score: 7
Sauce: Hollandaise. The sauce was quite good. I had just the right amount and the consistency was great. Not too acidic or buttery and blended well with the other elements to get that really good benedict bite.
Score: 5
Sides: Potatoes with peppers. Also a slice of orange and strawberry. The potatoes were a little underdone and the peppers were done nicely, but the fruit was an odd addition to the plate. It added color and was a nice way to finish, but one slice of a strawberry is weird. It’s a strawberry. Commit to the whole thing or don’t do it at all.
Score: 3
Bonus: None officially but their cocktails were great. The Peach Mimosa and Pineapple Upside Down cocktail were also each delightful.
Total Score: 23/30
