Eggs Benedict @ Wallabout Seafood & Co.
Wallabout Seafood & Co. is pretty new to the Fort Greene neighborhood, but their brunch makes them immediately right at home. We made reservations for a special occassion, and it’s a good thing we did because the entire upstairs (yes, they have an upstairs dining area) was rented out for a wedding morning-after brunch. Seating downstairs is very limited, and they didn’t have a table ready for us yet, so they gave us complimentary Prosecco at the bar while we waited, so we were off to a great start. Here’s how the eggs benedict rated.
Base: English Muffin. We’re off to a perfectly standard start where the muffin was toasted nicely and held up to the rest of the dish. Nothing special, but nothing bad.
Score: 3
Non-Egg Protein: Smoked pork loin. So, by smoked pork loin, they really mean the thinnest slices of prosciutto possible. Like, you could just barely see a couple corners peaking out from beneath the eggs. Honestly, I can’t even really fairly rate the taste because I hardly even noticed it was there. Disappointing to say the least.
Score: 1
Eggs: Mixed. One was good, and one was just north of soft. The yolk was still shiny, but it was definitely solid. No runny goodness out of that one, but the second egg was practically perfect. Other people’s benedicts had eggs that were pleasantly gooey and runny. I had the only dud at the table. So close, but consistency matters for a good eggs benedict.
Score: 6
Sauce: Hollandaise. They were much more generous with the hollandaise than they were with the meat, thankfully. It was on the thin side but the taste was right. There were some spices and chives that positively contributed to the flavor, which was needed because of the lack of meat layer.
Score: 4
Sides: Home fries and salad. The salad was plentiful with a light dressing. The potatoes had a good cook and were also coated with some sort of chipotle glaze that was quite tasty. If anything, there could have been more potatoes, but what was there was a solid addition.
Score: 5
Bonus: Unlimited mimosas! For an extra $15, you can get unlimited drinks for 2 hours, so obviously bonus points here. It does make things a tad pricier, but after 2 glasses the deal has paid for itself, and we had well beyond 2 glasses. They could have been faster on the refill, but there was a private event upstairs so I can understand a slower service. We did have to give up our table because there was another reservation coming in that didn’t have a table available, but they let us continue our 2 hours at the bar. Wallabout really knows how to use the bar to keep people happy.
