Greene Eggs & Ham @ The General Greene
The General Greene in Fort Greene is a special brunch place because it is, as far as I know, the earliest opening brunch place in the neighborhood (opening at 7am) and one of the few that serves brunch on weekdays as well. That makes General Greene a great option for those weekday brunch occasions, which would be every day in a perfect world. They also have an outdoor ice cream window in the summer which I highly recommend. But here’s how the General Greene’s Greene Eggs and Ham Benedict performed.
Base: Homemade biscuit. I’m always a sucker for a biscuit and this one did not disappoint. Soft on the inside with a perfect crust on the outside that still made it easy to eat as part of the whole. It really doesn’t get much better.
Score: 5
Non-Egg Protein: Ham. With the name Greene Eggs and Ham, naturally the protein is ham. This layer was nice and thick without the gristle and fat that sometimes finds it’s way into a benedict ham, but it could have been a little bigger to cover more of the biscuit.
Score: 4
Eggs: Both pretty good. Both of them were slightly over, but there was plenty of runny yolk to make a proper benedict.
Score: 8
Sauce: Mystery! The menu didn’t specify. It was a little more pale than a usual hollandaise and had a hint of possibly sour cream so I can’t identify for sure what this was. I can tell you it was delicious and there was plenty of it.
Score: 5
Sides: Fried green(e) tomato and salad. Despite what the menu says, there was only one fried green tomato that was underseasoned and seemed unnecessary. Had it been better, I may have a different opinion. The salad had pretty general green(e)s (couldn’t resist) were good with a subtle dressing that was nice and light.
Score: 3
Bonus: None. Though if you go, I recommend the Blushing Mimosa made with pomegranate juice and sparkling rosé. Not cheap or unlimited, but yummy.
Total score: 25/30
