Eggs Benedict @ Aita
Aita is a popular little neighborhood corner spot with unfortunately limited seating. We got there 20 minutes after opening and it was already filling up with a waiting list by the time we left. They also have a great, if expensive, dinner that I would recommend, but here's the benedict breakdown.
Base: English muffin. Nothing special here with the muffin, and it could have been toasted a little more to prevent it from getting soggy.
Score: 3
Non-Egg Protein: Canadian Bacon. Again, nothing special, but it had the right size to match the muffin and the right thickness to balance out the flavors.
Score: 4
Egg: Both pretty good. They both had the really runny yolk that just oozed out when cutting into them. They both had a layer of overcooked yolk, but there was plenty of runny yolk to mix with everything else. These eggs also achieved the rare feat of having a consistent cook.
Score: 8
Sauce: Béarnaise. So béarnaise is in the hollandaise family but encourages the addition of spices like tarragon and shallots in addition to the butter and egg whites. However, the butter was clearly the overwhelming flavor in the taste test, completely blocking any subtly of other spices that may have been there. It did actually blend nicely with the other benedict components, but by the end of the meal, I felt like I had eaten all the fried food at a state fair and left feeling gross and on the verge of a heart attack.
Score: 2
Sides: Salad and potatoes. The wedges were cooked well, nice and crispy on the outside. The salad was average but had the right dressing ratio.
Score: 3
Bonus: None
